CHAPTER THIRTY TWO

Neither Kerry King nor Harry Moore ever expected their first month with York Police to turn out like it did. DC King had come to the historical city straight out of uniform in Bradford – she’d seen her fair share of action, but that action mostly consisted of drunken weekend brawls and the odd domestic that got out of control.

DC Moore had been involved in two murder investigations in the capital but neither of them were anything like The Bluesman case and the string of murders they were dealing with right now. His first taste of murder involved a fight between two drug-addled junkies that had got out of hand. One of them had pulled a knife and stabbed the other in the neck. The wound had been fatal. The other murder also happened by accident. What started out as two women exchanging words outside a nightclub in Wimbledon ended with the tragic death of one of them when she fell to the ground and hit her head on the pavement.

Both murders were cleared up in a matter of days.

But now the two newest recruits to York CID were thinking the same thing: The city of York surely had to be the murder capital of England.

Peter and Lily Lewis owned a house in a quiet street in Clifton Moor. It was an attractive-looking three-bedroomed property not far from the open stretch of ground where the name of the estate came from. The people who lived in these houses were mainly middle-class professional types, with the odd retiree thrown in for good measure.

“Nice place,” DC Moore commented as he got out of the car. “I bet it cost a bob or two. You wouldn’t get a house like this for less than a bar down in London.”

“A bar?” DC King said.

“A million quid. Property in the capital has gone mental in recent years.”

“This is Yorkshire,” DC King said. “Houses are still reasonably affordable in Yorkshire. Do you think they know where Kevin is?”

“I wouldn’t hold your breath. If he is our copycat, his adoptive parents will be the last people to know anything about it. That’s just how it is.”

Peter Lewis was much older than DC King expected him to be. The man standing on the doorstep looked to be in his mid-sixties. He was completely bald and the wrinkles on his sallow skin made him look ill. His eyes were watery, and his corneas had a yellow tinge to them, and when he opened his mouth to speak DC King saw that the bottom row of teeth was missing.

“Mr Lewis?” she said.

“Can I help you?’ he asked.

DI King took out her ID. DC Moore did the same.

“We need to talk to you about your son, Kevin,” DC Moore said. “Can we come inside?”

“I don’t have a son by that name,” Peter told them.

“Kevin Blush?” DC King tried. “You took him in when he was twelve.”

“Aye,” Peter said. “That we did. Worst mistake of our lives, but he’s no son of mine anymore.
